Transforming Agriculture: Government Launches ₹2817 Crore Digital Agriculture Mission
11 December 2024, New Delhi: In a significant step towards revolutionizing Indian agriculture, the Government of India has launched the Digital Agriculture Mission with an outlay of ₹2817 crore. Approved on 2nd September 2024, the mission aims to establish a comprehensive digital ecosystem for agriculture, empowering farmers and agricultural stakeholders with innovative, farmer-centric digital solutions.
A key focus of the mission is the development of Digital Public Infrastructure for Agriculture (DPIA), including transformative initiatives such as Agristack, Krishi Decision Support System, and Comprehensive Soil Fertility & Profile Maps. These digital tools will provide timely and reliable crop-related information, facilitating better decision-making for farmers across the country.
The Agristack Project, a cornerstone of this mission, includes three foundational registries managed by State Governments:
- Farmers’ Registry for maintaining farmer-specific data.
- Geo-referenced Village Maps for precise agricultural mapping.
- Crop Sown Registry to track crop patterns across the nation.
As of 5th December 2024, over 29.99 lakh Farmer IDs have been created under this initiative, with a Digital Crop Survey (DCS) conducted in 436 districts for the Kharif 2024 season. Agristack operates as a federated system, ensuring that data ownership rests solely with the states, while adhering to the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2023 to uphold privacy standards.
The Digital Agriculture Mission promises to enhance transparency, drive innovation, and improve agricultural productivity. For agri-input companies, this initiative provides an unparalleled opportunity to align their strategies with data-driven insights, enabling targeted product offerings, better distribution channels, and increased farmer engagement.
