Toor Dal Adulteration Raises Serious Health Concerns in Bangalore

19 March 2025, Bangalore: Bangalore is facing a major food safety concern as officials have uncovered the adulteration of toor dal with the banned Kesri dal, a practice that poses severe health risks. Food safety authorities have confirmed that unscrupulous traders have been mixing Kesri dal, which is prohibited in India due to its toxic effects, with toor dal to cut costs and increase profits. In an alarming development, synthetic yellow dal has also been used to mask the adulteration, making it difficult for consumers to detect the fraud.

Kesri dal contains toxic compounds that have been linked to severe health conditions, including paralysis, nerve damage, and even cancer. Long-term consumption of adulterated toor dal could result in serious neurological disorders, causing irreversible harm to those consuming it regularly. The use of synthetic coloring agents to disguise the adulteration further adds to the health risks, as these chemicals can have carcinogenic effects.

Authorities have begun a crackdown on traders suspected of engaging in this malpractice, conducting raids in wholesale and retail markets. Samples have been collected and sent for laboratory testing to determine the extent of contamination. Consumers are urged to be vigilant while purchasing toor dal and to report any suspicious products to the authorities.

The discovery has sparked widespread concern among health experts and consumers alike, raising questions about the effectiveness of food safety regulations and enforcement measures. Officials are now working to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and impose strict penalties on those found guilty of food adulteration to ensure public health and safety.

As investigations continue, consumers are advised to buy dal from trusted sources and be cautious of unusually bright or synthetic-looking pulses, which may indicate adulteration.
