Thousands of Farmers Protest in Harda, Demand Soybean Price Hike to ₹6,000 per Quintal

13 September 2024, New Delhi: In a massive display of unity, thousands of farmers from across the district took to the streets in a large tractor rally, demanding a minimum price of ₹6,000 per quintal for soybean. Chanting slogans and displaying banners on their tractors, the farmers highlighted the increasing financial strain caused by the low prices of soybean, which have made it difficult to recover input costs.

The rally, which began in the early hours of the morning, saw farmers arriving from various villages, forming a sea of tractors adorned with Indian flags and placards reflecting their demands. The rally started from the ITI near Khandwa Road and passed through Khedipura, Sant Ravidas Tiraha, Narmadiya Dharamshala, Chandak Chowk, and Double Fatak, eventually concluding at the local market. The length of the tractor convoy was so vast that it took nearly three hours for all the tractors to clear Khedipura.

An estimated 2,500 tractors participated in the rally, with farmers from almost every village in the district joining the protest. The massive turnout caused widespread traffic disruptions in the city, with jams reported in several areas due to the sheer number of vehicles.

The farmers expressed their frustration over the low soybean prices, stating that they are unable to cover their production costs, leading to rising debt and financial hardship. “If the price isn’t raised to ₹6,000 per quintal, many farmers will find themselves further burdened by loans,” one protester remarked.

The rally, however, was marked by acts of solidarity and support. In several parts of the city, locals showered the farmers with flowers, with some even setting up stalls to welcome the protestors and offer refreshments. The farmers made it clear that their fight is for economic justice, not political influence. Despite the participation of farmers affiliated with various political parties, the rally was strictly non-partisan.
