Success Story: Farmer Earning Lakhs from Date Farming

18 September 2024, New Delhi: In recent years, many farmers have turned to agriculture as a profitable business, seeing significant financial gains. Several farmers have moved away from traditional crops and ventured into horticulture, earning substantial income. One such farmer is Sanjay Bhai Dobariya from Devalki village in Wadia Kukavav tehsil, Amreli district, in Gujarat’s Saurashtra region. By cultivating horticultural crops, he has made lakhs in profits and is now recognized in the area for his success. Inspired by him, many other farmers are now diversifying their farming by incorporating horticultural crops alongside traditional agriculture.

According to media reports, eight years ago, Sanjay Bhai Dobariya decided to switch to horticulture, starting with date farming. Today, he earns lakhs from his date crops. He has planted 120 date trees on one hectare of land. From each tree, which belongs to an Israeli variety of raw dates, he harvests between 100 to 150 kilograms of produce. The market value of this produce is estimated to be around ₹18 lakh. After accounting for farming and labor costs, his net profit stands at approximately ₹10 lakh.

Sanjay Bhai shared that he initially practiced traditional farming. However, during a visit to Kutch, he observed the successful cultivation of dates and was inspired to begin date farming in his region. Motivated by the farmers of Kutch, he planted 120 date saplings in Amreli. He also received a government subsidy of ₹16,000 to support his date farming venture. He emphasizes that if farmers focus on horticultural crops, they can achieve substantial financial returns.

In India, Gujarat’s Kutch district is the leading region for date farming and is well-known for this crop. In addition to Kutch, date farming is now being practiced on over 50 hectares of land in Amreli. The state government and the agriculture department are encouraging farmers to pursue horticultural crops, offering subsidies to support them. With government grants, farmers are making profits of up to ₹2 lakh per hectare.
