Training programme on ‘organic farming and vermicompost production’ concludes at KVK ROPAR

27 September 2021Punjab: Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ropar under the aegis of Directorate of Extension Education, PAU, Ludhiana and ICAR ATARI Zone-I organized a vocational training programme on ‘Organic Farming and Vermicompost Production’ from 20-24 September, 2021.

During the inaugural session, Dr. G. S. Makkar, Deputy Director (Trg.), KVK Ropar extended a warm welcome to the trainees and discussed the scope of organic farming especially in Kandi region of Punjab. While discussing, Dr Makkar encouraged the farmers to adopt organic farming as there is already lesser use of agrochemicals in the Kandi region. Dr Makkar informed that in addition to various lectures, hands-on practice sessions in vermicompost & Biofertilizer production units of KVK have been the major attraction for the participants.

Dr Opinder Singh Sandhu, Assistant Professor (Soil Science) and the training in-charge, guided the trainees about organic cultivation of major crops, vermicompost production, role of green manuring, crop residues and inclusion of legumes for improving soil health in organic farming. He stressed upon use of vermicompost and biofertlizers for providing proper nutrition to organically raised crops.

A special lecture by Mr. Tarun Sen, Manager, ‘Punjab-Agro’ was also arranged during this training. Mr. Sen discussed about organic certification standards and procedure for certification for organic products. Dr Sanjeev Ahuja, Assistant Professor (Horticulture) shed light on organic cultivation of vegetables and their marketing. Dr Pawan Kumar, Assistant Professor (Plant Pathology) discussed about the IPM practices in organic farming.
