PAU organized a online training webinar on successful cultivation of kharif crops and water saving
08 June 2021, Punjab: The Department of Extension Education, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), organized a online training webinar on “Successful Cultivation of Kharif crops and Water Saving” in collaboration with the State Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, block Sudhar, Ludhiana. In this webinar 50 farmers, scientists and Agriculture Development Officers participated.
Speaking on this occasion, Dr Kuldeep Singh, Head, Department of Extension Education, motivated the farmers to adopt water and labour saving technologies. Besides, he also called upon farmers to shift area from paddy to maize as there are many high yielding hybrids of maize were available and PMH 13 was the newest in the list released by PAU.

Dr Jasvir Singh Gill, Assistant Agronomist discussed in detail the paddy cultivation through DSR method. He explained the every necessary detail that farmers should keep in mind while practicing the DSR. He explained the various agronomic practices like field preparation, sowing time, seed rate, irrigation and weed control for getting success in DSR technique. He emphasized that farmers should follow the recommended sowing time and varieties in DSR for reaping the maximum benefit.
Dr Jaswinder Singh Brar, Block Agriculture Officer, Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, motivated the farmers to adopt various water saving technologies and urged the farmers to adopt the maize cultivation. He particularly told about the governments’ efforts to replace area under paddy to maize. He said govt is giving subsidy to the farmers directly into accounts if they replace area from paddy to maize.
Dr Ravinder Kumar from Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare shared his personal experience of DSR and explained the methods with which already available seed drills could be modified for the purpose of direct sowing of paddy.
He also explained the different schemes of the department with which farmers can be benefitted.
Dr Gurjit Kaur from Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Ludhiana shared her views with the participants. Mr Gurveer Singh explained about various facilities available by ATMA for the farmers. He explained the importance of natural resources and their conservation.
Dr Kamalpreet Kaur, Extension Scientist motivated the farmers to use e-sources during this pandemic time. She also emphasized adoption of short duration varieties of paddy to get better returns. She further explained that recommended varieties of paddy by PAU not only would give comparable yield but also reduce the straw load.
Later, the participants had a productive discussion with experts.
