18 July 2021, Punjab: The Dept of Climate Change and Agricultural Meteorology, PAU organized a “Climates Change Awareness Program” during a Kisan Meet program on 16 July 2021 at village Bauranga Zer, Deistrict Fatehgarh Sahib.
Mr Palwinder Singh, a progressive farmer of the village was felicitated for receiving the “Best Progressive Farmer” award from Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture, Hyderabad. He had been awarded for his far sightedness in using the weather related advisory in his farming practices which is a major component of the project –National Innovations on Climate Resilient Agriculture. He is a role model for the farmers who successfully adopt the diversified agricultural practices.
Dr P P S Pannu Additional Director Research (Natural Resource Management), the chief guest of the function discussed the how the farmers should reorient their agricultural practices to combat the climate changes which have visibly happened over the past few years. He also stressed upon the planting of short duration cultivars of rice like PR126 to help check the sharp decline in ground water resources in the state.
Dr Prabhjyot K Sidhu Head Department of Climate Change and Agricultural Meteorology, PAU discussed the importance of role of weather on crops. She urged the farmers to make the best use of the forecasted weather services being provided by Punjab Agricultural University.
Dr Jaswinder Singh, Deputy Director of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Fatehgarh Sahib apprised the farmers about the services provided to the farmers. He discussed the importance of getting the soil tested before the indiscriminate usage of farm inputs is done and this would help reduce the cost of production of the crops.
Dr S S Sandhu, Principal Agronomist conducted the program and apprised the farmers about optimization of farm water practices to save the depleting ground water resources. He also discussed the crop management for raising a good crop of paddy.
