Sowing Seeds of Change: CEASI’s Stakeholder Workshop Promotes Direct Seeded Rice for Sustainable Farming

29 July 2024, New Delhi: The Centre of Excellence for Agriculture Skills in India (CEASI) conducted a pivotal Stakeholder Workshop on Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) in Karnal, Haryana. The event, which brought together agricultural experts and industry leaders, highlighted the environmental and economic benefits of adopting DSR practices in the rice-wheat cropping system.

Dr. Suresh Gehlawat, Additional Director Agriculture, Haryana (Retd.) and expert in Sustainable Agriculture, presented compelling data on the environmental impact of DSR. He stated, “If 1 lakh hectares are cultivated using DSR, it can reduce methane emissions equivalent to 35 lakh tones of CO2, comparable to planting 16 crore trees.  He explained. “This practice has a profound positive impact on the environment, promoting a sustainable and eco-friendly rice-wheat cropping system.”

Dr. Rajbir Garg, Regional Director, RRS, HAU, Karnal, emphasized the economic advantages for farmers. “DSR practice is a better choice for farmers as it saves time for wheat cultivation and reduces labour costs by ₹5,000 to ₹6,000,” he explained.

Adding to the technical aspects, Dr. Ankur Chaudhary, Assistant Scientist, Agronomy, RRS, HAU Karnal, stressed the importance of timely herbicide application based on local weed flora for optimal results in DSR cultivation.

The event also witnessed significant support from Nuziveedu Seeds, a leading Indian seed company renowned for its farmer-centric approach. As part of its ongoing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, Nuziveedu Seeds played a crucial role in the workshop, reflecting its commitment to fostering sustainable agricultural practices.

Dr. Harsev Singh and Dr. Ritu Sharma from CEASI lauded Nuziveedu Seeds for its philanthropic contributions to the farming community. “Their support is a testament to the company’s dedication to enhancing agricultural sustainability and farmer welfare,” they remarked.

CEASI, an autonomous organization under the Agriculture Skill Council of India (ASCI), operates under the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE). This workshop is part of their ongoing efforts to enhance skills and capacity building among farmers and stakeholders in the agricultural sector.
