Rabi Sowing Update for 2024-25: Ministry of Agriculture Reports 7.31 Lakh Hectare Increase in Acreage

10 December 2024, New Delhi: The Ministry of Agriculture has released the latest data on Rabi sowing for 2024-25, indicating a promising increase in total acreage. As of now, the area under Rabi crops has risen to 493.62 lakh hectares, compared to 486.30 lakh hectares during the same period last year, marking a significant growth of 7.31 lakh hectares.

Wheat Leads the Growth

The increase in acreage is largely driven by wheat, which remains the primary Rabi crop. Wheat has seen a notable rise of 5.34 lakh hectares, with the total area increasing to 239.49 lakh hectares from 234.15 lakh hectares last year. This highlights favorable weather conditions and farmer confidence in wheat cultivation.

Pulses Record Impressive Growth

Pulses as a category have also performed well, with an overall increase of 4.95 lakh hectares, reaching 120.65 lakh hectares compared to 115.70 lakh hectares last year. Within pulses:

  • Gram saw the highest growth, with an increase of 5.74 lakh hectares to 86.09 lakh hectares from 80.35 lakh hectares.
  • Lentil registered a marginal increase of 0.25 lakh hectares, rising to 14.75 lakh hectares.
  • Declines were observed in crops like Kulthi (-0.63 lakh hectares), Urdbean (-0.49 lakh hectares), and Moongbean (-0.35 lakh hectares).
  • Other Pulses showed promising growth, adding 0.74 lakh hectares.

Shri Anna & Coarse Cereals Show Marginal Improvement

The category of Shri Anna and Coarse Cereals has shown a slight increase of 0.69 lakh hectares, with total acreage rising to 35.77 lakh hectares from 35.08 lakh hectares last year. Notable highlights include:

  • Jowar, which increased by 1.05 lakh hectares, reaching 19.38 lakh hectares.
  • Small Millets, a traditionally less cultivated crop, gained 0.13 lakh hectares.
  • Barley, however, declined by 0.50 lakh hectares, dropping to 5.65 lakh hectares.

Oilseeds Face Decline

In contrast to the overall positive trends, the area under oilseeds has decreased significantly by 3.94 lakh hectares, falling to 86.52 lakh hectares from 90.45 lakh hectares. Key observations include:

  • Rapeseed & Mustard, the largest contributor in this category, declined by 3.62 lakh hectares to 81.07 lakh hectares.
  • Groundnut also saw a drop of 0.20 lakh hectares, while Linseed reduced by 0.16 lakh hectares.
  • On the brighter side, crops like Sunflower and Safflower recorded slight increases of 0.06 lakh hectares and 0.03 lakh hectares, respectively.

Rice and Total Acreage Highlights

  • Rice, primarily a Kharif crop, reported a minor increase of 0.27 lakh hectares, with the total area rising to 11.19 lakh hectares.
  • The overall total area under Rabi crops has increased by 7.31 lakh hectares, signaling robust agricultural activities and favorable conditions for the Rabi season.

The data showcases a mixed trend, with remarkable growth in wheat and pulses, marginal improvement in coarse cereals, and a noticeable decline in oilseeds.
