Punjab’s Paddy Procurement Begins Smoothly for KMS 2024-25

16 October 2024, Punjab: Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution met with the Punjab Chief Minister to discuss paddy procurement operations for the 2024-25 Kharif Marketing Season (KMS). Paddy procurement in Punjab, which commenced on October 1st, is progressing smoothly.

Last year, the state successfully procured 124.14 lakh metric tonnes of rice. For this year, the Government of India has approved the procurement of 124 lakh tonnes of rice from Punjab, equating to 185 lakh tonnes of paddy. Over 2,200 mandis are operational in the state to facilitate procurement, with 6 lakh tonnes already procured for the central pool by mid-October.

The government has ensured streamlined operations, with facilities such as online registration, integration of land records, and timely MSP payments, which are credited directly to farmers’ accounts within 48 hours. Adequate storage arrangements are in place to accommodate incoming rice, with plans to free up 40 lakh tonnes of storage space by liquidating previous wheat and rice stocks.

In the meeting, the Union Minister and Chief Minister also discussed several pressing issues, including revising commission rates for procurement, resolving concerns around millers’ transportation charges, and ongoing studies on paddy-to-rice Out Turn Ratio (OTR) at IIT Kharagpur. Solutions to these matters are expected soon, ensuring that the procurement process remains smooth and beneficial for Punjab’s farmers.

Paddy procurement will continue till November 30, 2024.
