Poverty-Free Villages: Rural Development Ministry Sets Bold Targets for 2025

05 January 2025, New Delhi: Aiming to transform India’s rural landscape, the Rural Development Ministry, under the leadership of Shivraj Singh Chouhan, is setting its sights on creating poverty-free villages through the timely implementation of government schemes. Speaking on the occasion of New Year in the capital, Chouhan emphasized the significance of these efforts in achieving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a poverty-free India.

During a comprehensive review of the ministry’s programs—including MGNREGA, PMGSY, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), NRLM, DAY-NRLM, NSAP, and Disha—Shri Chouhan outlined monthly targets for the ministry’s activities. “Once a target is set, the path to achieving it becomes clear. We are committed to achieving these goals to make our villages poverty-free,” he stated, expressing optimism about the ministry’s progress and wishing the nation a Happy New Year.

Key Achievements of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (June–December 2024)

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) has seen significant milestones in the past six months. In August 2024, the scheme was extended for five years, with a target to construct an additional 2 crore houses by the financial year 2029. The eligibility criteria for beneficiaries have been revised to include more families, aligning with the goal of housing for all.

Technological advancements have played a crucial role in enhancing the scheme’s efficiency. The Awas Plus-2024 mobile app, launched by the Prime Minister in September 2024, and the Awas Sakhi app, introduced by the Minister in October, have streamlined processes and improved accessibility for beneficiaries.

Budgetary allocations for the scheme have also witnessed a historic increase, with ₹54,500 crore earmarked for the financial year 2024-25. Out of the 42 lakh houses targeted for the year, 31.65 lakh have been sanctioned, and 4.19 lakh completed between June and December 2024, including 71,000 houses under PM Janman.

Focus for January 2025

Looking ahead, the ministry plans to sanction the remaining 10 lakh houses under the current financial year’s target and release the first instalment of funds to beneficiaries. Chouhan reiterated the ministry’s commitment to accelerating progress and meeting the aspirations of rural India.
