Pomegranate Farming Thrives in Kutch Against All Odds
11 March 2025, New Delhi: Kutch, once known for its arid terrain and limited water availability, has witnessed a transformation in pomegranate cultivation, thanks to improved irrigation access from the Narmada. The region has now emerged as a key contributor to Gujarat’s pomegranate production, which spans 43,500 hectares and yields approximately 6.3 lakh metric tons annually. Kutch and Banaskantha together account for nearly 4.8 lakh metric tons of this total.
In a recent initiative to support pomegranate growers, UPL Limited organized a ‘Kisan Mela’ in Anjar, Kutch. The event brought together agricultural experts from various universities and a group of 30 progressive farmers to discuss best practices and challenges in pomegranate farming.
Varun Shroff, representing UPL, engaged directly with farmers, discussing their concerns and potential solutions to enhance productivity. Farmers showcased their harvests, reporting a successful yield, while experts provided insights on improving crop management and addressing cultivation challenges.
Recognizing outstanding efforts, the event also included awards for the top five pomegranate growers. Participants expressed appreciation for the initiative, emphasizing the value of such interactive sessions in enhancing both yield and quality. Many farmers advocated for more frequent knowledge-sharing events tailored to high-value crops like pomegranate.
