PMFAI’s Buyer-Seller Meet 2024 Commences at New Delhi with Key Discussions

02 September 2024, New Delhi: The Pesticides Manufacturers and Formulators Association of India (PMFAI) organized its Buyer-Seller Meet as part of the International Crop Science Conference and Science Exhibition in Delhi today. The event attracted over 800 delegates from India and countries across the Middle East, Asia Pacific, Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the USA.

In his inaugural address, Pradeep Dave, President of PMFAI, emphasized the critical need to increase food production in response to the growing global population, with India playing a vital role in this effort. He stated, “It is essential to highlight the importance of crop protection and disease control in agriculture. Currently, 25% of global crop loss is attributed to diseases, with India facing a loss of 15-25%. Advancements in seeds, crop nutrition, crop protection and mechanisation sectors are crucial for maintaining agricultural productivity.”

Dr. Archana Sinha, Secretary CIB & RC, Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare said, “India has 335 registered molecules in the agrochemical sector. The industry has seen remarkable growth, with exports increasing from ₹270 crores to ₹50,000 crores. Regulators are encouraging exports of pesticides, and the ministry is addressing the crop grouping concept to assist the industry with label claims. Raising awareness among farmers about off-label pesticide use and promoting judicious practices will protect crops and the environment. This event will enhance knowledge about the global agrochemical market and facilitate connections between buyers and sellers.”

Dr. JP Singh, Plant Protection Adviser, Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare said remarked, “The sector has made significant contributions to food security and rural livelihoods. We have transitioned from being food deficient to food efficient, now exporting grains to other nations. Since 1998, exports have surged from ₹270 crores to ₹50,000 crores. We are compiling a list to develop effective modes of action for missing label claims, which will help safeguard farmers’ crops against pests and diseases. While there are 338 agrochemical molecules, we currently have only 50 biologicals. Investment in research is vital for diversifying and enhancing biological solutions, steering us toward a sustainable future.”

Deepak Shah, Chairman and Managing Director SML Ltd. added, “India has emerged as the second-largest exporter of agrochemicals worldwide, thanks to the Ministry of Agriculture’s support. The industry is increasingly focused on research, with over 1,000 patents now held in India. Research and innovation are no longer confined to the West. .”

The event spans two days, featuring a conference and exhibition on September 2nd and 3rd in New Delhi.
