Pest Attacks and Adverse Weather Slash Mango Production by 50% in Andhra Pradesh
26 April 2025, New Delhi: Mango farmers in the north coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh including Anakapalle, Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram Manyam, and Srikakulam are grappling with a major setback this season. Pest outbreaks coupled with erratic weather patterns have led to an estimated 50% drop in mango production, severely affecting the expected harvest of the summer fruit.
In Vizianagaram and Manyam districts alone, mango plantations cover around 35,000 hectares. Popular varieties such as Banganapalle, Suvarnarekha, and Panukulu dominate the orchards here, catering to high demand from Odisha, West Bengal, Mumbai, Delhi, and even overseas markets. The Banganapalle variety, known for its superior table quality, remains a top choice among consumers.
M Srinu, a mango farmer from the region, shared, “We were hoping for a strong harvest this year. However, due to unfavorable weather and a sudden surge in pests over the past week, our crops have suffered badly. We had expected yields of around five tons per hectare, but now it looks like the harvest will shrink by at least half.”
According to AVSV Jamadagni, District Horticulture Officer, Vizianagaram district typically records over 30,000 hectares under mango cultivation, with yields often reaching up to seven tons per hectare. This season, though, farmers might manage only two to three tons per hectare under the current conditions.
Another grower, Ramu Naidu, voiced concern over mounting financial losses, stating he invested over ₹15 lakh into mango farming this year. Recent storms and strong winds have worsened the situation, damaging large portions of the crop and likely pushing market prices higher. Presently, Banganapalle mangoes are selling for about ₹800 per dozen, while Rasalu varieties are priced around ₹600 per dozen.
