PAU’s Department of Food and Nutrition Celebrates World Breastfeeding Week in Swaddi Village

06 August 2024, Punjab: The Department of Food and Nutrition at the College of Community Science, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), celebrated World Breastfeeding Week in the village of Swaddi in Sidhwan Bet, Ludhiana. The event focused on mothers’ and infants’ survival, health, and well-being.

Dr Kiran Grover, Head of the Department of Food and Nutrition, shared that World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated globally during the first week of August, supported by WHO and UNICEF. This campaign aims to raise awareness about the benefits of breastfeeding, promote supportive breastfeeding practices, and improve the health of mothers and infants. The Department celebrated the week under the All India Coordinated Research Project on Women in Agriculture (AICRP-WIA).

Dr. Renuka Aggarwal, a Scientist in the department, delivered a lecture on the “Importance of Omega-3 Fatty Acids for Pregnant and Lactating Mothers.” She emphasized how a mother’s intake of these nutrients can enhance the quality of breast milk, potentially improving the Intelligence Quotient (IQ) of the baby, a crucial piece of information for the 45 farm women, including pregnant and nursing mothers, as well as Anganwadi workers, who participated in the event.

During the event, a recipe incorporating omega-3 fatty acids into the diet was demonstrated to the participants. The women keenly listened to the lecture and expressed enthusiasm for receiving further nutritional guidance to benefit their children and families.
