PAU-KVK Sangrur Hosts Farmer Training On Sustainable Wheat Cultivation Under FAO-GEF 7 Project
13 January 2024, Punjab: The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Sangrur, under Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), organized a one-day farmer training programme titled “Integrated Management of Micro and Macro Nutrients in Wheat Crop” at Village Balad Kalan, Block Bhawanigarh. The initiative was conducted under the Food and Agriculture Organisation’s (FAO) GEF 7 (FOLUR) Project, focusing on sustainable agricultural practices to enhance wheat productivity and soil health.
Dr. Mandeep Singh, Associate Director (Training), KVK Sangrur, led the session by emphasizing the importance of sustainable farming practices and optimal use of farm inputs in wheat cultivated under various rice residue management conditions. He highlighted the economic and environmental benefits of reducing excessive agrochemical use and advocated for practices that protect soil health and safeguard the environment.
Dr. Rukinderpreet Singh, Assistant Professor (Agronomy), provided insights into identifying macro and micro-nutrient deficiencies in wheat and discussed timely interventions to prevent productivity loss due to nutrient imbalances.
Farmers were also introduced to effective weed management strategies, including both chemical and non-chemical methods, to minimize competition with wheat crops and improve overall growth.
The training concluded with a visit to demonstration plots, where participants observed practical applications of the techniques discussed during the session. Farmers raised queries regarding herbicide efficacy and managing pink stem borer infestations, which were addressed by KVK experts. PAU literature was also made available for purchase.
