Nutri Garden Initiative to Empower Farm Women of West Garo Hills

19 July 2024, New Delhi: ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, West Garo Hills launched an initiative to empower farm women by establishing Nutri Gardens in villages under Gambegre Block. The project  NARI (Nutri Sensitive Agricultural Resources and Innovations) aims to promote family farms for enhanced family nutrition through the skill development of women and promotion of dietary diversity. Anaemia, prevalent in Garo Hills due to dietry deficiencies, can be mitigated by cultivating and consuming nutritious crops. Through the dedicated effort of ICAR-KVK West Garo Hills, 30 These nutri gardens aim to improve family health by providing a source of iron rich and diverse vegetables.

A training programme on ‘Scientific Nursery Management in vegetable crop’ was conducted today at village Aminda Simsang by ICAR-KVK experts.

The programme included a method demonstration on using organic micronutrients (Arka Vegetable Special) to enhance plant growth and yield. Additionally, micronutrients and  vegetable seeds including okra, cowpea, ridge gourd etc from  IIHR, Bengaluru, one of the leading research institute in horticultural crops in India was distributed to the farm women.

The progress of nutria- garden is being  monitored by KVK scientists and feed back is  collected to ensure the initiatives success.

A total of 45 farm women attended the programme.
