New Record in MSP Wheat Procurement: Madhya Pradesh Nears 85 Lakh Metric Ton Mark
09 April 2025, Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh government has revised its wheat procurement estimate upwards from 80 lakh metric tons (LMT) to a new target of 85 LMT, setting a fresh record in procurement under the Minimum Support Price (MSP) scheme.
As of Tuesday, 76 LMT of wheat had already been procured from 8.76 lakh registered farmers across the state. According to the latest figures, total procurement has now touched 81 LMT. Urban Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya announced in Tuesday’s cabinet meeting that the procurement process would continue until today, May 9.
The procurement, which began on March 15, is being conducted at 4,000 designated centers across the state. Wheat is being purchased at ₹2,600 per quintal—this includes the MSP of ₹2,425 plus an additional state bonus of ₹175 per quintal. In comparison, Madhya Pradesh had procured 40 LMT of wheat from 5.85 lakh farmers last year. This year’s procurement is expected to double that figure.
So far, payments amounting to ₹16,472 crore have been made to farmers. If the 85 LMT target is achieved, total payments are expected to reach ₹19,400 crore under MSP, with an additional ₹1,400 crore provided as a bonus.
To streamline the process, the state government enabled registration via SMS, web, and mobile applications, allowing farmers to register from the comfort of their homes. Physical registration centers were also set up at gram panchayats, janpad panchayats, and tehsil offices.
For the 2025–26 Rabi marketing season, the Central Government had increased the MSP of wheat by ₹150, setting it at ₹2,425 per quintal. However, the Madhya Pradesh government enhanced the offer by providing an additional ₹175 per quintal, raising the total procurement price to ₹2,600 per quintal.
Wheat varieties like Sharbati and Durum, known for their high yield and quality, are grown in less irrigated regions of the Malwa Plateau such as Sehore, Ujjain, Narmadapuram, Harda, Raisen, and Dewas. Among these, Sharbati remains the most popular due to its high protein content.
