Kharif sowing sees 13.9 percent increase in area coverage compared to last year

31 July 2020, New Delhi: Kharif crops in 2020 has been sown with an increase in area coverage by 13.9% compared to last year. Area covered till date is 882.18 lakh ha against 774.38 lakh ha area during the corresponding period of last year.

As per the forecast received from IMD, rainfall during the second half (August to September) of the 2020 monsoon season is likely to be above normal (>106% of LPA). Actual rainfall received in the country is 447.1 mm against normal of 443.3 mm i.e. departure of (+)1% during the period from 1 June 2020 to 30th July 2020.

As per report of Central Water Commission, the live water storage available in 123 reservoirs in the country is 141 % of live storage of corresponding period of last year and 103% of storage of average of last ten years. Over all the availability of the irrigation water will remain good in the coming days.

Pulses sowing is about 111.91 lakh ha against 93.84 lakh ha area of last year, recorded an increased in area coverage by 19.26%. States of Rajasthan (5.25 lakh ha) followed by Madhya Pradesh (3.79 lakh ha) have reported higher area coverage.

Farmers have sown Paddy on 266.60 lakh ha against 223.96 lakh ha area of last year, recorded an increased in area coverage by 19.04%. States of Bihar (10.01 lakh ha) followed by Madhya Pradesh (8.19 lakh ha) have reported higher area coverage.
