75% of Kharif sowing done in India with 800 lakh ha sown

24 July 2020, New Delhi: Despite the lockdown slowing down various sectors in India, the farming sector is moving at a steady pace. Kharif sowing has reached 800 lakh ha of 1066.44 lakh ha normal sown area.

This year, the monsoon has been normal with showers covering India 12 days in advance. This gave a good pace to the sowing acreages which is now 18% ahead compared to corresponding period of last year.

The production and movement of fertilizer has been comfortable across the country till now. There is a substantially increase of fertilizer sale during Kharif 2020 as compared to last year.

Urea sale has gone up by 63.07% compared to last year. Sale of DAP fertilizer has gone up by 108.72%. At the same time, NPKS and MPO have registered 124.71% and 62.78% growth compared to last year.

The  Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Mr. D V Sadananda Gowda has assured availability to all the states as per the supply plan and will even be ready for additional demand.

Crop Coverage

Paddy has covered about 220.24 lakh ha area compared to last year (187.70 lakh ha). Additional 32.54 lakh ha area has been covered compared to last year. Higher area is reported from the State of Uttar Pradesh (6.50 lakh ha) and Jharkhand (6.10 lakh ha).

About 99.71 lakh ha area coverage under Pulses has been reported compared to last year (79.30 lakh ha). Thus 20.41 lakh ha more area has been covered compared to last year. Higher area is reported from the States of Maharashtra (5.32 lakh ha).

Sugarcane has seen increase in acreage with a coverage of about 51.54 lakh ha which was 51.02 lakh ha last year. The normal area coverage of Sugarcane as per Directorate of Economics & Statistics is about 48.46 lakh ha.
