Nashik Farmers Protest Against 20% Onion Export Duty Amid Falling Prices
11 March 2025, New Delhi: Farmers in Maharashtra’s Nashik district staged a protest at Lasalgaon’s wholesale market, demanding the removal of the 20% export duty on onions. The demonstration disrupted trade for two hours as growers voiced concerns over declining prices.
Bharat Dighole, president of the Maharashtra State Onion Growers Association, emphasized the urgency of their demand, stating, “With the summer crop ready for harvest, wholesale prices are already falling. If the duty is not removed soon, farmers will suffer heavy losses.”
The export ban imposed earlier due to a lower-than-expected harvest was lifted in 2024, but the duty remains in place, affecting onion shipments to key markets such as the Middle East, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh.
Lasalgaon market secretary Narendra Wadhavane noted that tensions escalated during the protest, with some demonstrators climbing a water tank before being persuaded to come down by the police. Trade resumed after the situation was brought under control.
MLA Dilip Bankar raised the issue in the legislature, prompting Minister Jaykumar Rawal to assure that the matter would be discussed with the central government.
