Mr. Manikrao Shivajirao Kokate, Minister of Agriculture, Govt. of Maharashtra visits ICAR-NRCG Pune
23 January 2025, New Delhi: Mr. Manikrao Shivajirao Kokate, Minister of Agriculture, Government of Maharashtra, visited the ICAR-National Research Centre for Grapes (ICAR-NRCG), Pune today. He was accompanied by Mr. Kailas Bhosale, President, and Mr. Abhishek Kanchan, Chairman-Central Research Committee of the Maharashtra State Grape Growers’ Association.
The Minister expressed his appreciation for the institute-developed grape varieties, ‘Manjari Medika’ and ‘Manjari Naveen,’ recognizing their potential to transform grape cultivation in the region. He emphasized the importance of expanding their cultivation across Maharashtra to benefit grape farmers and the broader agricultural community.
Mr. Kokate also acknowledged the challenges associated with importing patented climate-resilient grape varieties and assured the institute of his full support in addressing these hurdles. He stressed the significance of organizing specialized training programs for farmers’ children and women farmers to improve livelihoods and ensure the long-term sustainability of grape cultivation.
In response to the hailstorm damage to vineyards in recent years, which has severely impacted grape production and farm economies, the Minister called for strengthening research into protected cultivation techniques to mitigate the adverse effects of such climatic risks.
He also released the information brochure for ABI Draksha, aimed at supporting agri-startups and agro-industry stakeholders.
Earlier, Dr Kaushik Banerjee, Director, ICAR-NRCG, briefed about the institute’s recent accomplishments in grape research.
