
MPUAT Unveils New Crop Innovations and Strategic Research Focus at Kharif 2025 Regional Advisory Meeting
21 April 2025, Udaipur: Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology (MPUAT), Udaipur, hosted a two-day meeting of the Regional Research and Extension Advisory Committee (RREAC) for Zone IV-A, held on April 16 and 17 at the Directorate of Research auditorium. The meeting, chaired by Dr. Arvind Verma, Director of Research, focused on shaping future strategies for Kharif 2025 through collaborative dialogue between scientists, policymakers, and departmental officials.
In his address, Dr. Arvind Verma highlighted MPUAT’s significant achievements in agricultural research and innovation. He stated that the university has secured 54 patents over the years, reflecting its commitment to technological advancement. MPUAT has also achieved national registration for three indigenous goat breeds—Sirohi, Gujri, and Karauli—demonstrating its contribution to livestock development. Dr. Verma further announced the development of several high-yielding crop varieties this year, including Chetak (a new opium variety), PHM-6 (maize), Pratap Asaliya-1 (chandrasura), Pratap Isabgol-1 (psyllium), Pratap Ashwagandha-1, and Pratap Groundnut-4. Two forage maize varieties, PMC-14 and PMC-16, have been submitted for national-level approval. He also outlined the various technologies developed under ongoing research projects and emphasized their potential in addressing regional agricultural challenges.
Dr. S.S. Shekhawat, Additional Director of Extension at Pant Krishi Bhawan, Jaipur, urged scientists to align their research with the broader goal of holistic farmer development. He encouraged a focused approach towards artificial insemination, small-scale mechanization, promotion of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), GI tagging of region-specific products, and the strengthening of oilseed cultivation. He appreciated the quality of presentations made by university scientists and lauded MPUAT’s research projects for their relevance and execution.
Mr. I.S. Sancheti, Additional Director of Agriculture, Bhilwara, provided a comprehensive review of the previous Kharif season. He discussed rainfall distribution, crop area coverage, and productivity data, and also shared insights on the difficulties faced by farmers across the region. He requested the scientific community to propose practical and timely solutions to these challenges.
Dr. Amit Trivedi, Regional Research Director, welcomed all guests and highlighted the university’s ongoing projects and the agro-climatic characteristics of Zone IV-A. He emphasized the importance of region-specific research and shared a detailed report outlining the major issues affecting crop performance in the zone, along with proposed recommendations.
