Monsoon 2025: Rainfall Expected 5 Days Early, Anticipation of Bumper Rice and Maize Crop

13 May 2025, New Delhi: Good news for Indian agriculture: the southwest monsoon is expected to arrive earlier than usual this year. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon could hit the Kerala coast on May 27, which is five days ahead of schedule. This would mark the earliest monsoon onset in the past five years, raising hopes for a bumper harvest of crops like rice, maize, soybean, and sugarcane.

A Positive Signal for Farmers

The monsoon plays a vital role in India’s $4 trillion economy, fulfilling nearly 70% of the country’s annual rainfall needs. It is essential for irrigating fields and replenishing reservoirs. More than half of India’s agricultural land is rainfed and heavily dependent on the monsoon. An early onset this year could allow farmers to begin sowing earlier, improving crop prospects.

When and Where Will the Monsoon Begin?

According to IMD forecasts, the monsoon is likely to start in Kerala on May 27, with a possible variation of ±4 days. Typically, the monsoon begins around June 1 and spreads across the entire country by mid-July. The arrival of rains boosts sowing activities for key kharif crops like rice, cotton, soybean, and maize.

A Look Back at Previous Year

Last year, the monsoon reached Kerala on May 30. After a drought in 2023, heavy rains in 2024 helped revive crops. IMD has also predicted above-normal rainfall for 2025. Normal monsoon rainfall is considered to be 96% to 104% of the Long Period Average (LPA), which stands at 87 cm (35 inches).

With the monsoon arriving early and predictions of strong rainfall, 2025 could bring significant relief and growth opportunities for India’s farmers and agri-economy.
