Mango Supply in Hyderabad Markets Declines Due to Delayed Arrivals
12 March 2025, New Delhi: A delay in mango arrivals at Hyderabad’s key markets, including Batasingaram, Bowenpally, and Gudimalkapur, has resulted in reduced supply, pushing prices up to ₹199–₹398 per kilogram. Experts attribute this delay to climatic variations affecting mango trees.
Typically, mango shipments begin arriving in early March, but this year, the situation is different. A market official shared, “Farmers have informed us that due to climatic factors, mango trees are bearing fruit later than usual. The supply is gradually increasing, and from the second half of March, we expect a higher influx of trucks bringing in mangoes.”
So far this season, 1,072 metric tons of mangoes—equivalent to 650 truckloads—have reached the markets from regions like Vijayawada, Anantapur, Kurnool, Tamil Nadu, and Mahabubnagar. Farmers are supplying popular varieties such as Totapuri, Himayat, Pedda Rasalu, Benishan, and Natti Mallika. Last year, 7,788 truckloads had arrived by February, whereas this year, the figure stands at 4,556. By March 10 last year, 502 truckloads had been delivered, whereas this year, only around 358 have reached the markets.
Horticulture experts caution that local mango production may be impacted due to a mango hopper infestation. These pests can harm mango crops by damaging flowers, puncturing young fruits, and weakening the trees, leading to a lower yield. A specialist explained, “Mango hoppers are a serious threat as they weaken the plants, affecting both fruit formation and overall supply.”
A variety of mangoes, including Himayati, Pedda Rasalu, Chinna Rasalu, Dasheri, Neelam, Mallika, Sundari, Pandari, Apusa, Lal Bagh, Malguba, Gola, Mahamooda, Rumali, Palanguava, Benishan, Totapari, Cheruka Rasalu, and Langda, are typically available in Hyderabad’s markets during the mango season.
