Malawi Mangoes Hit Mumbai Late, Priced at $18 per Box Amid Global Supply Challenges

04 December 2024, Mumbai: Malawi mangoes, a specialty from South Africa, have made a late entry into Mumbai’s Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) market this year, priced at approximately $18 (₹1,500) per box. Typically arriving in early November, this year’s delay is attributed to extended rains in South Africa, which impacted flowering and harvesting timelines.

The initial shipment of 945 boxes has been distributed to major markets in Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, and Rajkot. These mangoes, cultivated from Alphonso grafts imported from Ratnagiri 14 years ago, have been a part of India’s import portfolio since 2018. Importer Sanjay Pansare notes that this season’s crop is smaller in size but expected to gain momentum with weekly shipments of around 7,000 boxes starting soon. The Malawi mangoes undergo hot water treatment to maintain quality, ensuring their appeal remains high due to their Alphonso-like flavor and complementary harvest season.

Alongside Malawi mangoes, 275 boxes of South Africa’s Tommy Atkin mangoes have also been imported, adding variety to the market. With the ongoing wedding season boosting demand, these premium mangoes are increasingly popular as luxury gifts. The current season is projected to continue until late December, promising steady availability despite the initial delays.
