Mahseer Hatchery Inaugurated at Manipur University
13 March 2025, New Delhi: A new Mahseer Hatchery, jointly established by the ICAR-Central Institute of Coldwater Fisheries Research, Bhimtal, and the Manipur University, was inaugurated today at the campus of Manipur University. The Hon’ble Governor of Manipur, Mr. Ajay Kumar Bhalla, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, officially inaugurating the Mahseer hatchery.
In his address, the Governor highlighted Manipur’s rich water resources and urged stakeholders to leverage government schemes like PMMSY to make the state’s fisheries sector self-reliant.
Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Manipur University, emphasized the crucial role of collaborative initiatives in driving innovation and progress within the fisheries sector. He highlighted how strategic partnerships between premier research organizations like ICAR, NFDB, etc. and universities can serve as catalysts for sustainable fisheries development in the state of Manipur.
Dr J. K. Jena, Deputy Director General (Fisheries Science), ICAR, underscored the critical importance of mahseer conservation, highlighting the ecological significance of mahseer and the urgent need for concerted conservation efforts to safeguard its dwindling populations. He lauded the establishment of the hatchery as a pivotal step toward securing the future of Mahseer.
Dr Pramod Kumar Pandey, Director, ICAR-CICFR, highlighted the multifaceted impact of the newly established Mahseer Hatchery, emphasizing its role as a center of excellence for Mahseer conservation, seed production, and fisheries development in Manipur while underscoring its potential to foster research, capacity-building, and community engagement, and strengthening aquaculture-based conservation efforts.
Dr B. K. Behera, the Chief Executive, NFDB, Hyderabad, highlighted the central schemes implemented by the NFDB and their scope in the development of the fisheries sector in Manipur.
During the event, a booklet Mahseer Hatchery: Standard Operating Procedures was also released. The Mahseer captive maturation and hatchery technology has been developed and patented by the ICAR-CICFR team.
The event witnessed the participation of over 200 attendees, including students, farmers, academicians, and other stakeholders.
The Mahseer Hatchery will be instrumental in conservation, seed production, and fisheries development, actively supporting the restoration of mahseer stocks while ensuring the long-term sustainability of their populations and riverine ecosystems.
