Madhya Pradesh Takes Initiative to Tackle Groundwater Crisis: Plan to Recharge One Lakh Wells

07 April 2025, Bhopal: In a major step to address the depleting groundwater levels, the Madhya Pradesh government has announced a plan to recharge one lakh wells using the dug well recharge technique under the Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan.

The Department of Panchayat and Rural Development has issued detailed guidelines for implementing the initiative, which aims to ensure a stable water supply for farmers during the Rabi season.

What is the Dug Well Recharge Method?

The dug well recharge method is being promoted as a simple and scientific technique to replenish groundwater. It involves directing rainwater into existing wells through recharge pits or filters, allowing the water to percolate and raise the groundwater level. Experts believe this method can help maintain water availability over a longer period, though its true impact will become evident over time.

Criteria for Selection of Wells

Under the plan, wells with a water level greater than 10 meters and that remain filled until December-January after the monsoon will be selected. Wells constructed under MGNREGA, known as Kapildhara wells, may also be included—provided they do not already have a recharge pit.

Recharge pits will be constructed at a distance of 3 to 6 meters from the well, using a specially designed structure containing layers of stone and coarse sand to filter the water before it is piped into the well.

Private well owners will be responsible for cleaning and maintaining their wells, while the upkeep of public wells will be entrusted to the local gram panchayats. The government believes this approach will encourage community participation and spread awareness about water conservation.

Groundwater levels in many rural parts of Madhya Pradesh have been steadily declining, creating challenges for irrigation. While the state government sees this campaign as a long-term solution to the water crisis, experts caution that its success will largely depend on effective on-ground implementation.
