Madhya Pradesh Farmers Demand Ban on Import of Illegal Chinese Garlic
27 September 2024, Mandsaur: Regional Member of Parliament Sudhir Gupta discussed with the district officials of Mandsaur, Neemuch and Ratlam to ban the import of illegal Chinese garlic and take appropriate action and asked all the concerned officials to take this matter seriously.
Gupta said that the parliamentary constituency is leading in garlic production, and a large quantity of garlic arrives in the agricultural produce markets and wholesale retail vegetable markets here, in such a situation, the arrival of substandard Chinese garlic in the market is a matter of great concern. Since Mandsaur parliamentary constituency is the leader in garlic production in the country. From here, a large quantity is exported to all the markets of the country as well as abroad. In such a situation, the arrival of Chinese garlic in the markets will not only affect agricultural production but the business class will also have to suffer losses.
Gupta said that the Modi government at the center has constantly encouraged Indian farmers and traders to export Indian garlic to the world and has also made a strict strategy for it, as a result of which India saw a 245 percent increase in garlic exports, which reached a record 30 million dollars in 2023. The contribution of the parliamentary constituency is also important in this record growth. MP Gupta also urged the collector that the concerned officers should be vigilant. He said that the staff of the Food Department of the area, Krishi Upaj Mandi Samitis and the Police Administration should be extra vigilant along with making efforts to seize, destroy, punish and remove substandard garlic from every area of purchase and sale of markets.
Also, information should be provided by putting up flex boards so that the general consumer can identify substandard Chinese garlic. Gupta said that unfortunately, China is committing serious crimes like killing people by using substandard chemicals like metal, lead, chlorine to increase production of garlic. It is well known that excessive use of harmful chemicals in fruits and vegetables causes fatal diseases like liver and kidney disease and the digestive system gets completely damaged. Recently, in one of his letters, the US Senator has expressed concern about public health regarding the quality of garlic grown abroad, which is a serious issue and is directly related to garlic grown in communist China. In contrast, Indian farmers do not use harmful chemicals to increase production, due to which foreign countries’ trust in Indian garlic has increased.
