Krishonnati Yojana (KY): Enhancing Food Security and Agricultural Self-Sufficiency

04 October 2024, New Delhi: Krishonnati Yojana (KY), approved under the rationalization of Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS), is a major initiative focused on ensuring food security and agricultural self-sufficiency in India. With a total budget allocation of ₹44,246.89 crore, KY aims to address the most pressing challenges in Indian agriculture, including the need for sustainable food production and the development of efficient value chains.

Mission-Mode Schemes under KY

Krishonnati Yojana encompasses several mission-mode schemes that target specific agricultural needs:

  1. National Mission for Edible Oil-Oil Palm (NMEO-OP): This scheme focuses on increasing domestic production of edible oils, reducing India’s dependency on imports, and boosting the income of oil palm farmers.
  2. Clean Plant Program: Ensures the availability of disease-free planting materials to improve crop quality and yield.
  3. Digital Agriculture: Integrates modern technologies like AI, IoT, and blockchain to revolutionize farming practices, making agriculture more efficient and transparent.
  4. National Mission for Edible Oil-Oil Seeds (NMEO-OS): Aims to increase the production of oilseeds to meet the rising demand for edible oils, ensuring food security.

Focus on the North Eastern Region

A key component under Krishonnati Yojana is the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region (MOVCDNER), which promotes organic farming in the North Eastern states. Recently, an additional component called MOVCDNER-Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been introduced to give the region more flexibility in addressing specific challenges.

Holistic Agricultural Development

Krishonnati Yojana is designed to tackle the larger issues of food security and agricultural self-sufficiency. By promoting the production of essential commodities and fostering private-sector participation in the value chain, KY ensures that India can meet its growing food demands while supporting farmers’ welfare.

The rationalization of this scheme allows state governments to develop comprehensive agricultural strategies that suit their local needs. As a result, states can focus not only on crop production and productivity but also on emerging issues such as climate resilience and sustainable farming practices.
