Kisan Vigyan Foundation Drives Strategic Conversations at National Agri Input Conclave 2025

25 March 2025, New Delhi: The National Agri Input Conclave 2025, organized by PHD Chambers of Commerce, unfolded with the theme “Walking the Green Mile Towards Viksit Bharat: Ensuring Food Security, Economic Growth, and Self-Sufficiency by 2047”. The Kisan Vigyan Foundation (KAKV) played a pivotal role as the capacity-building partner, facilitating critical discussions on India’s agricultural future.

Dr. P.K. Singh, Agriculture Commissioner, Ministry of Agriculture, Chief Guest at the conclave emphasized the significance of the event amid India’s ambitious vision for 2047. “Achieving food security, economic growth, and self-sufficiency by 2047 is essential for India’s future. All our government schemes are strategically aligned to achieve these goals. For instance, the PM-Kisan scheme has provided financial assistance to farmers, disbursing over ₹3 lakh crore since its inception. Similarly, the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) safeguards farmers against crop losses, while the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund, with a budget of ₹1 lakh crore, aims to strengthen agricultural infrastructure across the country,” he stated. Dr. Singh further highlighted the Ministry’s initiatives to boost oilseed production, develop advanced seed varieties, and enhance post-harvest processing to maximize output and reduce imports.

Streamlining Policy Framework

Addressing the session on seed policy, Mr. Vijay Sardana, Chairman of the Governing Council at KAKV, underscored the critical need for a strategic shift in agricultural practices. “As India approaches 2047, the nation faces unprecedented challenges in agricultural sustainability and food security. With land availability projected to decline to a mere 0.8 hectares per capita, the country must strategically reimagine its approach to food production. The challenge is not just producing enough food but generating resources for food, feed, fiber, and biofuels from increasingly limited agricultural land,” Mr. Sardana noted.

He also highlighted the complexities posed by climate change and declining soil health, stressing the potential threat to India’s sovereignty and economic independence if food dependency rises. Mr. Sardana advocated for streamlining policy, investments in advanced seed genetics, agricultural technologies, and comprehensive food production strategies, urging stakeholders to prioritize sustainable and resilient agricultural practices. He further advocated for an exclusive session on agricultural technologies and proposed a common QR code for all agricultural inputs to enhance traceability and prevent spurious products.

In the session on fertilizer efficiency, Dr. Ramendra Singh, Council Member of KAKV, expressed concern over declining productivity. “In the 1960s, farmers obtained 12 kg of food grain per kg of NPK, which has now dropped to merely 5 kg. The core issues stem from government policies, particularly the over-subsidization of urea, which distorts fertilizer usage patterns. Current soil testing laboratories are inadequate, failing to provide holistic recommendations, including crucial micronutrients and carbon levels,” Dr. Singh stated.

He proposed a multi-faceted approach to address these challenges, advocating for nutrient stewardship, precision agriculture techniques, biological fertilizers, and restructured government subsidies. According to Dr. Singh, a shift towards an integrated, sustainable agricultural strategy is crucial for improving fertilizer use efficiency, enhancing soil health, and building climate resilience.

The National Agri Input Conclave 2025 served as a platform to address pressing agricultural issues and strategize for a self-reliant India by 2047. As the capacity-building partner, KAKV emphasized the need for collaboration among policymakers, scientists, and stakeholders to transform challenges into opportunities for innovation and sustainable development.
