Kharif 2022 sowing reaches 69.15 lakh hectares

04 June 2022, New Delhi: The latest statistics released by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare suggests a smooth start to the kharif 2022 sowing. The area coverage is in sync with last years’ acreage of corresponding period. The total acreages as on 3rd June 2022 has reached 69.15 lakh hectares.

The Department of Agriculture has targeted 125.57 lakh hectares in cotton, 397.06 lakh hectares in rice, 140.18 lakh hectares in Pulses, 183,57 lakh hectares in coarse & nutri cereals, 184.11 lakh hectares in oilseeds, 47.53 lakh hectares in sugarcane and 7.09 lakh hectares in jute & Mesta.

The government plans to bring in self-sufficiency in pulses production by closing the yield gaps, expansion in area coverage (additional 6.2 million hectare) and enhancement in productivity from 817 kg/ha to 1000 kg/ha. Government also plans to increase productivity and acreage under oilseeds.

The south-west monsoon had set over Kerala on 29th May 2022 which is three day ahead of normal date. Indian Meteorological Department has predicted monsoon to be normal for the year 2022.
