Kashmir’s Garlic Production Soars With Chinese Seeds; Elevate Quality and Shelf Life

12 June 2024, New Delhi: Kashmir’s agricultural landscape has witnessed a remarkable rise in garlic production this season, with an additional 2,500 tons added to the total expected output, which now stands at 70,000 tons. Garlic, renowned for its unique flavor and celebrated as a key ingredient in Kashmiri cuisine, has long been a cherished cash crop in the region.

Local farmers and traders have highlighted the multifaceted advantages of garlic, including its role in managing blood pressure and cholesterol levels, making it a sought-after health-conscious ingredient. Javaid Ahmad, a farmer from Pulwama, emphasized the significance of garlic beyond its culinary uses, mentioning its diverse applications in homemade remedies.

Bilal Ahmad Dar, a prominent garlic trader, discussed the potential for garlic production to reach a level of significance akin to the esteemed apple cultivation in Kashmir. He underscored the importance of improving processing techniques to enhance the market value of Kashmiri garlic, noting that the current practice of selling unprocessed garlic often results in lower profits for farmers.

Dr. Aejaz Malla, an expert in the field, shared insights on the evolution of garlic cultivation in Kashmir. He mentioned that the introduction of Chinese garlic seeds has elevated the quality and shelf life of Kashmiri garlic, making it a globally recognized product. However, Dr. Malla stressed the need for further processing and value addition to enable farmers to achieve better prices for their produce.

The surge in garlic production and the growing recognition of its multifaceted benefits have positioned Kashmir as a hub for this versatile crop, offering opportunities for both farmers and traders to capitalize on the rising demand and unlock the full potential of the Kashmiri garlic industry.
