01 September 2022, Kashmir: Apple is one of the major crops grown in Kashmir. More than 2.7 lakh hectares is under apple cultivation jointly in Jammu and Kashmir.

In the recent years, Iranian apples have started to infilterate the Indian market. This has led to the drop in the local apple prices which is affecting Kashmir farmers. The local apple growers association met the Union Agriculture Minister last year in 2021 September and appraised him about the concern. The association requested the government to put heavy import duty so as to stop infilteration in the local market.

No changes have been done since then in the import policy from the government’s end and the farmers are suffering due to low prices and hgh cost of cultiation.
