Interaction Meet With Prof. Arthur Riedacker, Co-nobel Peace Prize Laureate (2007)

14 November 2024, New Delhi: ICAR-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute organised an interaction meet with Prof Arthur Riedacker, an eminent climate expert, Honorary Research Director, INRA, France, and co-recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the IPCC. The meeting brought together scientists and staff of the Institute to discuss climate change effects on the coastal region of India and adaptation strategies.

Dr Parveen Kumar, Director, ICAR-CCARI, briefed about the unique vulnerabilities faced by India’s coastal ecoregions in light of climate change. He stressed the urgency of effective adaptation measures. Dr Kumar urged Prof Riedacker’s guidance on approaches to strengthening resilience in these regions.

Prof. Riedacker provided insights into the critical role of climate-resilient crop varieties and livestock breeds, highlighting that close collaboration between scientists and policymakers is essential for implementing proven practices and technologies effectively. He also addressed the fishing sector, underscoring the importance of diversifying livelihoods as a strategy to build resilience against climate-related uncertainties.

Following the discussion, Prof. Riedacker visited ICAR-CCARI’s experimental units, where scientists sought his guidance on field-level research for practical climate solutions. He urged the young researchers to focus on applied research that directly benefits society.

A total of 30 participants, including scientists, technical staff, and project staff of the Institute, attended the programme.
