India’s F&V Export Sector Thrives Despite Volume Drop

04 December 2024, New Delhi: India’s agricultural exports showed resilience in FY 2023-24, as the value of fruit and vegetable exports increased to $1.8 billion, despite a decline in volumes to 3.91 million tons. Similarly, floriculture exports witnessed an 8% growth in value, reaching $208 million, even as export volumes fell marginally to 34,132 tons, as per the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).

Key players in logistics and export infrastructure have contributed significantly to this growth. Hyderabad International Airport recorded a 25% increase in fruit and vegetable exports during the first half of FY 2024-25. The rise is attributed to new exporters entering the market and improved facilities at the GMR Aero Cargo Logistics Terminal. The airport also resumed poultry exports, with over 800 tons of hatching eggs dispatched.

Adani Airports, managing hubs in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Lucknow, reported a 6% increase in perishable cargo handling, driven by vegetable, mango, and meat exports. Shipping companies like Maersk highlighted growth in banana exports and the promising outlook for frozen processed potato shipments, supported by a state-of-the-art cold storage facility at the Maasvlakte terminal in Rotterdam Port.

International airlines like Cathay Cargo and Etihad Cargo have also seen significant growth in their India-related operations. Cathay Cargo registered a 50% year-on-year increase in perishable handling, while Etihad Cargo reported a 19% rise in tonnage during the first half of FY 2024-25. Both airlines are investing in advanced cool-chain infrastructure to cater to the rising demand.

Sustainability and technology are emerging as game-changers in the sector. Hyderabad International Airport has adopted green building practices and uses sustainable packaging materials. Adani Airports and Cathay Cargo are working to reduce environmental footprints, while Etihad Cargo emphasizes using recyclable materials and optimizing routes. Innovations like IoT-enabled monitoring systems are enhancing the reliability of logistics, ensuring temperature-sensitive goods reach markets with minimal spoilage.
