India Supplies 38.27 LMT DAP Against 35.52 LMT Pro-Rata Demand for Rabi 2024-25

11 December 2024, New Delhi: The Government of India has ensured an adequate supply of Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) for the ongoing Rabi 2024-25 season, actively addressing both domestic requirements and logistical challenges. According to the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (DA&FW), the total DAP requirement for the Rabi season is 52.05 lakh metric tonnes (LMT). For the pro-rata period from October 1 to December 3, 2024, the requirement was assessed at 35.52 LMT, against which 38.27 LMT of DAP has already been made available across states.

Of the DAP supplied, 29.22 LMT has been sold to farmers during this period, leaving a closing stock of 9.05 LMTwith the states. This demonstrates the government’s commitment to not only meeting the assessed demand but also maintaining surplus stocks for uninterrupted supply.

Ensuring DAP Availability

The Government has implemented a series of robust measures to secure timely and adequate fertilizer supplies each cropping season. The DA&FW assesses state-wise and month-wise fertilizer requirements in consultation with all State Governments before each season begins. Based on these assessments, the Department of Fertilizers issues monthly supply plans and monitors the movement of subsidized fertilizers across the country through the Integrated Fertilizer Monitoring System (iFMS).

Regular weekly video conferences between the DA&FW, the Department of Fertilizers, and state agriculture officials allow for real-time resolution of supply issues. The gap between domestic production and demand is met through imports, with the Government finalizing import plans well in advance to ensure timely availability.

To bolster DAP supplies, the Government of India, through fertilizer companies, is actively engaging with major DAP-producing nations such as Morocco, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia to procure additional quantities. This international outreach is critical to addressing seasonal demand spikes and maintaining adequate stocks.

Policies Supporting Farmers

The Government has also implemented the Nutrient-Based Subsidy (NBS) Policy since April 1, 2010, under which subsidies are provided for notified phosphatic and potassic (P&K) fertilizers, including Single Super Phosphate (SSP). Recently, Nano DAP has been included under the Fertilizer Control Order (FCO) 1985 to promote sustainable and efficient fertilization practices.

The guidelines for P&K fertilizers ensure that farmers receive these essential inputs at subsidized rates, safeguarding affordability while supporting agricultural productivity.
