India Restricts Import of Low-Cost Herbicide Glufosinate
30 January 2025, New Delhi: On Friday last week, the Indian government announced new regulations limiting the import of the herbicide Glufosinate when priced below ₹1,289 per kilogram. This move aims to reduce the influx of cheaper shipments of the chemical into the country.
Imports of Glufosinate priced at or above ₹1,289 per kilogram, however, remain unrestricted. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) clarified in a notification that the restriction applies to Glufosinate and its salts with a minimum purity of 95%. The policy states, “Import of Glufosinate and its salts is restricted for shipments with a CIF value below ₹1,289 per kilogram. Imports are permitted without restrictions if the CIF value is ₹1,289 per kilogram or higher.”
CIF, or cost, insurance, and freight, is a standard term in international trade used to calculate the total value of imported goods. For shipments falling under the restricted category, importers must obtain a government-issued license.
Data reveals that India imported Glufosinate worth $177 million between April and November of the current fiscal year, compared to $238.13 million in the previous fiscal year (2023-24). During the first eight months of this fiscal year, the majority of Glufosinate imports came from China ($58.72 million), the United States ($46 million), and Israel ($30.50 million).
