India Participates in G20 Agriculture Ministerial Meeting in Brazil

16 September 2024, New Delhi: Union Minister of State for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Ram Nath Thakur, along with Indian Ambassador to Brazil, Suresh Reddy, and Joint Secretary (NRM) from the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, attended the G20 Agriculture Ministerial Meeting in Cuiabá, Brazil, from September 12-14, 2024.

In his address, Thakur emphasized India’s agricultural priorities under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He highlighted India’s holistic approach to agricultural development, which focuses on productivity while ensuring economic, social, and environmental sustainability to enhance farmer prosperity. He also underscored India’s implementation of the world’s largest food-based safety net programs to guarantee food security and nutrition.

Thakur reaffirmed India’s commitment to building resilient agricultural systems for a sustainable future. He stressed the importance of Special and Differential Treatment for developing and least-developed countries, particularly in empowering small and marginal fishers in India and beyond to participate in global trade discussions.

The G20 meeting focused on four key priorities: agricultural and food system sustainability, enhancing international trade’s role in food security, supporting family farmers and local communities, and integrating sustainable fisheries and aquaculture into global value chains.

Thakur also engaged in bilateral meetings to strengthen India’s agricultural ties with other nations. He congratulated Brazil for its successful G20 Presidency and extended best wishes to South Africa for its upcoming presidency.
