India Administers 107.34 Crore FMD Vaccine Doses, Strengthens Livestock Health Initiatives

13 February 2025, New Delhi: The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, has taken significant steps to streamline vaccination programs for major livestock diseases, including Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), Brucellosis, Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), and Classical Swine Fever (CSF). Under the Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme (LHDCP), vaccination for these diseases is provided with 100% central assistance across all States and Union Territories. As of January 2025, 107.34 crore doses for FMD, 4.39 crore for Brucellosis, 20.40 crore for PPR, and 0.67 crore for CSF have been administered. The recently completed FMD Round IV covered 96% of targeted livestock, with 24.84 crore vaccinations. Meanwhile, FMD Rounds V and VI are currently underway, with 14.89 crore and 2.29 crore doses administered, respectively.

To enhance the efficiency of the vaccination program, the government has ensured the timely supply of quality-tested vaccines and undertaken awareness initiatives for stakeholders. The Assistance to States for Control of Animal Disease (ASCAD) scheme supports the control of exotic, emergent, and zoonotic diseases through a 60:40 funding model (Central: State), 90:10 for hilly and North-East states, and 100% for Union Territories. Additionally, efforts to combat Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) have resulted in the vaccination/re-vaccination of over 27.21 crore cattle across the country.

In support of these initiatives, the government has also provided financial assistance to key research institutes, including ICAR-NIFMD (Bhubaneswar), ICAR-IVRI (Bareilly & Bengaluru), ICAR-NIVEDI (Bengaluru), and the Chaudhary Charan Singh National Institute of Animal Health (Baghpat), all of which play a crucial role in FMD-related research and vaccine development. Furthermore, to ensure efficient monitoring and data transparency, vaccination records are regularly uploaded to the Bharat Pashudhan Portal, which also integrates ear-tag registration for better livestock management. These comprehensive measures reflect the government’s commitment to strengthening livestock health, preventing disease outbreaks, and enhancing the overall well-being of the animal husbandry sector in India.
