Increase in Support Prices of Oilseeds and Pulses Pushes Sowing Acreage by Over 50 Percent

12 July 2024, New Delhi: As per the recent data released by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, the acreages of Pulses and Oilseed have grown by over 50% when compared to the sowing done as of this week last year. Pulses have been sown in 36.81 lakh hectares whereas it was 23.78 lakh hectares in the corresponding period of last year. The Sowing of Arhar as of last year in this week was 4.09 lakh hectares and has gone up by about 4 times reaching 20.82 lakh hectares.

A similar trend has been observed in Soybean where the sowing of soybean last year in this week was at 28.86 lakh hectares and has gone up by two times reaching 60.63 lakh hectares.

There will be more clarity on the increase in acreage as it can be attributed to both an increase in minimum support price and the timely arrival of monsoon across India as of now.

Millets Fail To Attract Farmers

Despite a significant push in the minimum support prices of millets, the crops have failed to attract farmers as most of them are unable to find the right market or sell the crop at support prices. The area as of this week is about 80% lower compared to last year covering 17 lakh hectares.

Cotton Shows Significant Growth

The sowing of cotton has reached 80.63 lakh hectares, which is 29% higher than 62.34 lakh hectares in the same period last year.

The total area under Kharif is 378 lakh hectares which is 14% higher when compared to the corresponding week of last year.
