ICAR-RCER, Patna organizes Field Day on Rice Fallow Management & Farmer-Scientist Interaction
06 January 2025, New Delhi: Under the leadership of Dr. Anup Das, Director, ICAR-Research Complex for Eastern Region, Patna, a comprehensive program is being conducted to transform the rice fallow areas of eastern India into green, fertile regions. The primary goal of this initiative is to introduce farmers to advanced agricultural techniques and enhance their production capacity.
On January 4, 2025, a Field Day focused on rice fallow areas, specifically for pulse and oilseed crops, was organized at Guleriachak Village in Tekari Block, Gaya District. The event featured an interactive session between farmers and scientists, where modern agricultural practices were shared, and strategies for increasing production were extensively discussed.
The multidisciplinary team of Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Senior Scientist, discussed with farmers about methods for maintaining soil moisture and successful cultivation techniques for pulse and oilseed crops. The farmers were also provided with valuable information on irrigation management, soil conservation practices, and the latest agricultural techniques.
The program highlighted ongoing research activities conducted on approximately 100 acres of land, where chickpea, lentil and mustard crops are being cultivated using crop residue management techniques, including zero-tillage.
Dr. Manoj Kumar Ray, Senior Scientist and Head KVK Manpur; Dr. Sudhanshu Shekhar, Senior Scientist and Head KVK Ramgarh; and Dr. Ved Prakash, Scientist ICAR-RCER Patna, along with other experts, provided detailed information to farmers on modern rice fallow management practices, including soil moisture management and soil conservation.
The scientists particularly emphasized the importance of nutrient management, advising farmers on the benefits of spraying N:P:K (19:19:19), 2% urea solution, and DAP solution on leaves. This technique improves the nutritional quality of crops, enhancing growth, boosting yields, and improving the quality of flowers and fruits. Ultimately, this leads to increased production.
Over 100 farmers participated in the event, which was made successful through the significant contribution of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Manpur, Gaya. This program proved to be an essential step in enhancing agricultural productivity by familiarizing farmers with cutting-edge agricultural techniques.
“The event was part of the National Workshop on Strategies and Approaches for Greening Rice Fallow Areas, being co-ordinated by Dr. Rakesh Kumar, the organizing secretary of the event”, said Umesh Kumar Mishra, Member Secretary, Media Management committee of the institute.
