ICAR-NBFGR Organised An Awareness-cum-capacity Building Programme For Aqua Farmers In Sikkim
07 November 2024, New Delhi: ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow, organized an awareness and capacity-building programme aimed at enhancing the livelihoods of fisherfolk under the NEH (North Eastern Hill) programme of ICAR-NBFGR today in Gangtok, Sikkim.
The Chief Guest Mr. Puran Kumar Gurung, Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services, and Horticulture Departments, Govt of Sikkim, emphasised the significant step towards strengthening regional fisheries resources by fostering local expertise and encouraging the adoption of modern techniques.
Mrs. Roshini Rai, Secretary, Dept of Fisheries, Govt of Sikkim, and Mr. K.K. Shrestha, Director, Dept of Fisheries, Govt of Sikkim, also attended the programme.
Dr U.K. Sarkar, Director, ICAR-NBFGR, addressed the gathering virtually, emphasizing the significance of outreach activities in advancing the sector.
An interactive technical session was held for beneficiaries, offering scientific insights to help address the challenges of aquaculture and the conservation of endemic fishery resources in the region’s challenging terrain. Key aquaculture inputs, including quality seeds, feed, FRP tanks, ice boxes, and solar lanterns, were also distributed to support the livelihoods of aquafarmers.
A total of 60 fish farmers/beneficiaries participated in the programme.
