ICAR-NBFGR Fosters Growth in Tribal Fish Farming with STC Capacity Building Programmes
21 February 2025, Lucknow: ICAR-National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources, Lucknow, in collaboration with Nanaji Deshmukh Veterinary Science University, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, organised a capacity development programme for fish farmers and entrepreneurs of scheduled tribe communities under the Scheduled Tribe Scheme (STC) today, under the guidance of Dr U. K. Sarkar, Director, ICAR-NBFGR at the College of Fishery Science, NDVSU, Jabalpur.
Dr S.S. Tomar, Registrar & I/C Vice-Chancellor, Nanaji Deshmukh Veterinary Science University, inaugurated the event, emphasizing the role of fisheries in improving tribal livelihoods.
Dr S.R.K. Singh, Director, ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, highlighted the need for adopting advanced aquaculture technologies.
Dr Sunil Nayak, Director Extension Education, NDVSU, Smt. Shashi Prabha Dhurvey, Joint Director, Dept of Fisheries, Govt of MP, and other senior dignitaries also graced the programme.
The technical session covered key topics such as entrepreneurship in fisheries, disease management, water quality, and value-added fish products. Experts from ICAR-NBFGR, ICAR-CIFE, JNKVV-KVK, NDVSU, and the Department of Fisheries, Govt of MP, delivered lectures.
A total of 126 fish farmers and entrepreneurs from the ST community participated and received aquaculture inputs, including quality fish seeds, cast nets, and water testing kits, to enhance their livelihoods.
Dr Madhuri Sharma, Associate Professor, CFSc, NDVSU, Jabalpur, along with Dr Rajeev K. Singh, Principal Scientist & Head, GEEC Division, ICAR-NBFGR, and Dr Anutosh Paria, Scientist & Nodal Officer, STC, ICAR-NBFGR, Lucknow, coordinated the programme.
