ICAR-NAARM celebrates Parthenium Awareness Week -2024

26 August 2024, New Delhi: ICAR-National Academy of Agricultural Research Management, celebrated 19th Parthenium Awareness Week from 16th -22nd August 2024. The programme aimed to create awareness about the parthenium menace and ways of eradicating it through community-based approaches were taken up and the banners & posters displayed in the campus.

Dr. Ch. Srinivasa Rao, Director, ICAR-NAARM, briefed about the Parthenium weed and extent of harm it causes to agriculture productivity and human health. He urged the staff members to actively pursue ‘Parthenium Eradication’ as an important activity under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and ensure ‘Parthinium-free Campus’ of the Academy.

The Parthenium Awareness programme began with informal lectures and discussions on the historical background of parthenium emergence and spread in the country. The weed’s small size, light weight, large number, and long viability make it a problematic weed that affects agricultural fields, rail tracks, road sides, and educational institutions. Staff members, contractual workers, campus residents, and farm staff participated in the removal of parthenium weed from various areas on the academy’s campus during the week.
