ICAR Institutes celebrates World Food Day 2024

16 October 2024, New Delhi: World food day is celebrated every year to promote awareness about hunger worldwide and promote action for the future of food, people and the planet.

ICAR Institutes pan India celebrated world food day 2024 on the theme “Right to Food for Better Life and Better Future”.

Dr J.S. Mishra, Director, ICAR-DWR, stated that, although we have achieved the self-sufficiency in food grain production, we are fighting with malnutrition and climate change impacts. Planting fruit trees not only keeps our environment healthy but also provides good nutrition to all of us, he added.

A tree plantation programme was also organized, and 32 mango tree saplings (variety ‘Amrapali’) were planted by the staff and students of the Directorate under the campaign ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’.

The Chief Guest Dr P.K. Sahoo, Director, ICAR-CIFA, Bhubaneswar, emphasized that food is very precious and important for a healthy life. He also highlighted that prioritizing food security for all is essential, as adequate nutrition is vital for individual health and the overall well-being of communities and societies. Dr Sahoo emphasized that fish is a vital source of high-quality protein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. Consuming fish is vital for reducing the risk of chronic diseases and enhancing overall well-being and vitality, he added. The Director urged the farmers to adopt organic farming practices for boost of yield and better health, highlighting that these methods enhance soil fertility, biodiversity and ecosystem balance, ultimately leading to more nutritious food and a healthier environment.

A drone demonstration in aquaculture was organised for the participants, showcasing innovative technology for monitoring water quality, fish health and feeding efficiency. This cutting-edge approach enhances farm management, improves productivity and promotes sustainable practices, highlighting the potential of drones to revolutionize aquaculture and boost overall efficiency in fish farming.

A total of 72 participants including Officers & staffs of ICAR-CIFA & ICAR-KVK-Khordha, progressive farmers, SHG members, FPCL members participated in the programme.
