ICAR Institutes celebrates Kisan Diwas 2024

25 December 2024, New Delhi: The National Farmers Day also known as Kisan Divas is celebrated every year on 23 December, on the birth anniversary of the 5th Prime Minister of India, Choudhary Charan Singh, also a farmer’s leader, who introduced many policies to improve the lives of the Indian farmers.

ICAR-Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture, Chennai

Dr C.P. Balasubramanian, Director (I/c) briefed about the achievements and ongoing research activities to promote sustainable brackishwater aquaculture in the country.

On this occasion, a Farmer-Scientist interface session was organised at the Muttukkadu Experimental Station of ICAR-CIBA.

An awareness programme on seabass nursery rearing and crab farming was also conducted for the benefit of the participants. The participants interacted with the scientists and their queries and technical requirements were clarified by the scientists.

109 participants including fish farmers, fisherwomen, and students attended.

ICAR-Vivekananda Parvatiya Krishi Anusandhan Sansthan, Almora

Dr Lakshmi Kant, Director, ICAR-VPKAS, emphasized that Kisan Diwas serves as a reminder to honor the dedication of farmers and recognize their pivotal role in driving the nation’s progress. He urged the farmers to view agriculture as a profitable enterprise and also highlighted the importance of maintaining cleanliness in both agricultural practices and daily life.

Onion seedlings were distributed to the farmers under the RKVY project, and polytunnels were provided under AICRP on PHET’s SCSP component.

ICAR-Indian Institute of Water Management, Bhubaneswar

Dr H.K. Dash briefed about the on-going activities of the Institute in the locality in the domains of crop diversification and efficient resource management for enhancing the income of farmers.

Dr S.K. Mishra highlighted various programmes and schemes of the Central and state governments for water conservation and promoting start-ups, and FPOs to bring empowerment to our farming communities while boosting and sustaining crop production and productivity.

Over 175 farmers, farm women, and rural youths from nearby villages of Puri district attended the programme.

ICAR – National Bureau of Agricultural Insect Resources, Bengaluru

The Chief Guest, Shri N.S. Govindaraju, IAS, Controller, HSFC, ISRO Bengaluru, emphasized the importance of Farmers’ Day and highlighted the role of bio-control technologies in managing insect pests and diseases effectively and sustainably.

Dr T. Venkatesan, Director In-charge, ICAR-NBAIR, Bengaluru, presented an overview of the institute’s significant achievements in the biological control of insect pests.

As part of the SCSP plan, the Chief Guest distributed bio-control agents, pheromone traps with lures, and other essential inputs, along with battery-operated sprayers, to 100 farmers from Kolar and Hassan.

ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, Dehradun

Dr M. Muruganandam, Principal Scientist and TSP Coordinator, ICAR-IISWC, stated that as technology advances and production scales increase, drones will become more accessible and cost-effective for farmers and agricultural cooperatives, enabling widespread adoption in rural and farming settings.

The programme concluded with a live drone operation demonstration.

Approximately 75 farmers and farm women actively participated in the event, gaining hands-on exposure to drone technology and awareness of sustainable farming practices.

ICAR-National Institute of Animal Nutrition and Physiology, Bengaluru

Dr Artabandhu Sahoo Director, ICAR-NIANP, distributed 30 tons of cattle feed (DAPSC) and 97 rubber mats (NICRA) to SC dairy farmers under the DAPSC scheme.

He emphasized the importance of the DAPSC scheme initiated by the Government of India, highlighting its role in improving the livelihood of SC dairy farmers. Dr Sahoo also stressed the significance of balanced nutrition for dairy cows to ensure healthy and quality milk production.

A total of 144 farmers, including 34 SC dairy beneficiaries.

ICAR-Central Research Institute for Jute and Allied Fibres, Barrackpore

Chaudhary Charan Singh, Prof. Punjab Singh, Former Secretary (DARE) and DG (ICAR), former Vice-Chancellor, BHU, and Present Chancellor, RLBCAU, Jhansi graced the occasion as the Chief Guest whereas Prof. Pradeep Srivastava, Executive Director, TIFAC, DST, GoI and Dr Goutam Goswami, Head, Technology Foresight Division, TIFAC, DST, GoI were present as the Guests of Honour.

Dr Gouranga Kar, Director, ICAR-CRIJAF, addressed the audience and farming community and assured support for the complex, diverse, and risk-prone farming system of Sundarban.

During the programme agri-inputs like HYV paddy seeds, poultry chicks, poultry feed, vegetable seed kits, vermi-beds, minor irrigation kits, sprayers, etc. were distributed to the farmers.

Around 1000 farmers and farm women participated in this event.

National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning, Regional Centre, Udaipur

The celebration highlighted the potential of the region for Aonla (Indian gooseberry) production, with scientific studies confirming that the local soils are well-suited for its cultivation.

The Chief Guest Dr Nilanchal Katua, Deputy Director, Anthropological Survey of India, Western Region, Udaipur, emphasized the importance of adopting sustainable agricultural practices to enhance livelihood opportunities.

The event served as a platform for knowledge-sharing and capacity-building, empowering farmers to adopt advanced practices and make informed decisions for better agricultural productivity.

50 farmers attended the programme.
