Heatwave Slashes Maharashtra’s Strawberry and Mango Yields by Half
28 March 2025, New Delhi: Unseasonal high temperatures in Maharashtra, particularly in the Satara district, have severely impacted the cultivation of strawberries and mangoes. Since February, temperatures have hovered around 35-36°C, posing challenges for farmers in Mahabaleshwar, Wai, and Jawali talukas as March comes to an end.
In Mahabaleshwar, a key strawberry-growing region, the prolonged heat has disrupted the fruiting cycle, especially in the later stages. The excessive temperatures are causing strawberries to ripen too quickly, resulting in smaller fruits with diminished flavor. Ideally, strawberries thrive in temperatures between 15°C and 20°C, but the current weather conditions have deviated significantly from this range.
The early ripening and intense heat have damaged large portions of the crop, making them unsuitable for sale. Many farmers, who were expecting good yields this season, are now facing significant financial setbacks. The mango harvest has also suffered, with large fruits developing scars and an increase in premature fruit drop. Additionally, mango blossoms are drying up due to the extreme heat, reducing overall production.
Umesh Khamkar, a strawberry grower from Wai Taluka, shared his concerns: “We cultivate white strawberries, which usually have a six-month fruiting cycle. However, the rising temperatures are taking a toll on the crops. Many flowers are falling off, and we’ve had to use protective nets to shield the plants from excessive sunlight.”
Farmers estimate a 50% decline in production this season, further exacerbated by the high costs involved in strawberry farming. The ongoing heat stress is leading to fewer flowers, rapid ripening, and lower-quality produce. Additionally, the extreme weather conditions are creating a favorable environment for pests and diseases, adding to the farmers’ woes.
