Haryana Expands Bhavantar Bharpai Yojana to Potato Farmers and Increases Village Guard Wages

24 February 2025, New Delhi: Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has announced the inclusion of potato farmers under the Bhavantar Bharpai Yojana, a state-backed price protection scheme. An official spokesperson confirmed that approximately ₹46.34 crore has been disbursed to farmers under the scheme for the 2023-24 period.

The Bhavantar Bharpai Yojana aims to shield farmers from financial losses caused by declining wholesale market prices. The scheme currently covers 21 horticultural crops, including five fruit crops, 14 vegetable crops, and two spice crops.

Under the scheme, a protected price is set for each crop based on its production cost. If market prices drop below this benchmark when farmers sell their produce at mandis (agricultural markets), they receive compensation for the difference as an incentive. Since the scheme’s inception, 3,15,614 farmers have registered approximately 7,02,220 acres under the program. So far, around ₹110 crore has been provided as financial assistance to 24,385 farmers.

To avail the scheme’s benefits, farmers must register their crops on the ‘Meri Fasal Mera Byora’ portal, with verification conducted by the Horticulture Department. Upon selling their produce at the mandi, they receive a gate pass and a ‘J Form’ as proof of sale. The scheme is open to landowners, lessees, and tenant farmers.

In a significant move to support rural workers, the Haryana government has also raised the monthly remuneration of village chowkidars from ₹7,000 to ₹11,000, marking a 57% increase. The government is additionally working on issuing identity cards for these workers. Additional Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Saket Kumar, stated that the recruitment process for vacant chowkidar positions will commence soon. Currently, Haryana has 7,301 chowkidars, with 4,927 positions already filled.
