Haryana and Israel Present Joint Vision for Agricultural Innovation in Horticulture
11 April 2025, Chandigarh: Haryana and Israel have presented a joint vision for agricultural innovation in the field of horticulture. A key meeting took place between Haryana Agriculture Minister, Mr. Shyam Singh Rana and Agriculture and Food Security Minister, Israel, Mr. Avi Dichter, at the Indo-Israel Centre of Excellence for Vegetables in Gharaunda (Karnal). This meeting was held a day after both countries signed an agreement and action plan on agricultural cooperation in New Delhi.
During the meeting, Mr. Avi Dichter emphasized the need for water recycling in view of the issue of water pollution in Haryana. He said that everyone must use polluted water for irrigation. He advised Haryana to explore possibilities in this direction. Mr. Dichter also invited Haryana Agriculture Minister, Mr. Shyam Singh Rana, to visit Israel to closely observe the advanced technologies being used in irrigation, seed production, and climate-controlled farming.
Meanwhile, Mr. Shyam Singh Rana also shared details about Haryana’s ongoing efforts to purify saline water and promote natural farming. He informed that the state has set a target to make one lakh acres of saline water-affected land cultivable this year. He also highlighted the potential of promoting floriculture around the Delhi region.
The Agriculture Minister also highlighted Haryana’s geographical diversity and stated that despite being a small state, Haryana has made a significant contribution to the nation’s armed forces and in winning medals at international sporting events, he said.
Israel Minister, Mr. Avi Dichter appreciated the development of greenhouses and advanced farming systems in Haryana. He spoke about techniques like hydroponics, where plants signal their own need for nutrients. He also expressed a desire to jointly develop high-quality citrus fruit varieties—such as the Israeli lemon—by adapting them to Haryana’s climate.
Discussions held regarding Natural Farming Progress and Future Technologies with Israeli Counterpart
Mr. Shyam Singh Rana discussed the state’s progress in natural farming and explored the potential of techniques like trellising and multi-story mushroom farming. Emphasizing the need to reduce post-harvest losses, he stated that a large portion of our agricultural produce is lost after harvesting. We are working on minimizing post-harvest losses. Both ministers agreed to develop a Centre of Excellence in the field of hydroponics, marking a new chapter in the India-Israel agricultural partnership.
